Background of the Study
Semantic shifts—changes in the meanings of words—are accelerated by the rapid exchange of information on social media. In Nigeria, Twitter political hashtags have become a key driver of semantic change as users engage in debates and social movements. Through the creative repurposing of language, these hashtags transform common expressions into symbols loaded with political and cultural significance (Ibrahim, 2023). This study investigates semantic shifts by analyzing the evolution of meaning in political hashtags on Twitter. It explores how users reinterpret and redefine key terms in response to socio-political events and digital activism. The research examines the mechanisms through which online interactions facilitate semantic innovation, including code‑switching, metaphorical extension, and contextual redefinition. By situating these changes within broader sociolinguistic frameworks, the study aims to provide insights into how digital discourse drives meaning transformation in Nigeria (Okoro, 2024).
Statement of the Problem
Although Nigerian Twitter political hashtags clearly contribute to semantic shifts, there is limited empirical research on the specific processes driving these changes. Existing studies have predominantly focused on political outcomes rather than the linguistic mechanisms underlying semantic innovation. This gap restricts our understanding of how digital interactions reshape meaning in online political discourse. The study seeks to address this deficiency by analyzing semantic shifts in political hashtags, thereby clarifying the relationship between digital activism and language change (Chukwu, 2023).
Objectives of the Study:
To analyze semantic changes in Nigerian Twitter political hashtags.
To identify mechanisms driving meaning transformation.
To develop a framework for digital semantic evolution.
Research Questions:
What semantic shifts occur in political hashtags?
How do digital interactions facilitate these changes?
What socio-political factors influence semantic innovation?
Significance of the Study
This study enhances our understanding of how digital activism drives semantic change in Nigerian online discourse. Its findings are important for linguists, political analysts, and media scholars, offering insights into the interplay between language and digital activism (Ibrahim, 2023).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
Limited to Nigerian Twitter political hashtags.
Definitions of Terms:
Semantic Shifts: Changes in word meaning over time.
Twitter Political Hashtags: Hashtags used to frame political discourse on Twitter.
Digital Activism: The use of digital media for social and political change.
